My February Favorites

February flew by and brought with it some crazy weather for us in VA.  We went to Disney and of course loved the weather in Florida. We came home and surprisingly had a couple days in the high 60’s here as well.  That was a lovely way to return from vacation.  However, I say this as my kids are on their third snow day and I have eight girls over at my house.  Our temps are in the teens and boy when this stuff came down it stuck and was sheer ice.  Our area really doesn’t know how to deal with snow.  If we get an inch or two there is pandemonium and school is closed for days,  However, I enjoy that time with my kids. Especially if the days are banked and they don’t have to make them up.

If you’re a make up lover or a beginner with make make up you will probably love my new favorite APP this month called Plum Perfect.  You snap a selfie and within minutes popular make up brands such as Laura Mercier and Urban Decay are giving you make up options that would work for your skin type.  Give it a try and let me know how much you love it too.

I’m also really enjoying my Bowflex Treadclimber. I have a gym membership to Anytime Fitness and my family tends to work out together, but I really wanted a machine to have at home.  I really fell in love with this machine.  I can listen to music or watch tv in the privacy of my own home and workout with out having to leave the house or worry about waiting for a machine.  I would definitely recommend this machine and Bowflex was very easy to work with.

Speaking of working out, you have to have the latest in work out equipment.  For Christmas I got the Beats Wireless Headphones.  At the gym I’m sporting my new pink and gray headphones that are so awesome and quite easy to use.  All you have to do is have the bluetooth sync with your music apparatus and then you are set to workout. It comes in handy at the gym.  Once when I was running I was too far back from my phone and it went tumbling down on the treadmill.  It made such a loud noise and of course interrupted my workout. I’m so excited to be using this new product. No more embarrassing treadmill mess ups.

Last but not least, what are you watching this month?  I am in love with Criminal Minds.  Guys if you’re not watching this get on it.  There are 9 seasons to enjoy and boy am I into this show.  Some of them are pretty creepy, but the characters are very believable and Dr. Spencer Reid is my fave.  This show will have you thinking twice before you open your door to a stranger.

Make sure you’re following me on all my social media and leave a comment below about some new shows for me to watch or Apps for me to try.

Hospital Gala

Last weekend my husband and I attended a hospital gala in The Outer Banks of NC.  He is based out of VA Beach, but has recently opened an office in Nags Head to expand his business.  I am so proud of him.  I just had to tell you all about it.  He was one of the sponsors of the evening and we invited a table full of friends and clients to sit with us.  It was just such a fun evening.  Of course all the money raised will go back into the hospital funds which they desperately need. Now, back to the fun things women like to talk about when dressed up in a fancy evening gown for the night.

For make up, I started with clinique’s moisture surge moisturizer.  I couldn’t find my kiels so I used my old stand by. It’s always a good idea to start with a moisturizer that works for you.  I did not prime my face that evening.  I have dry skin and my make up usually does not slide around on my face.

For foundation I used MAC NC25 and I used a beauty blender to blend it out evenly.  Next, I used my Chanel brightener in Beige Tendre Light.  I have bad  no terrible dark circles under my eyes (especially the right side).  I used the Anastasia contouring kit for my bronzer in Fawn.  Then I used  MAC’s Pinch O’ Peach very lightly on the apple of my cheeks. Do you see a pattern here?  I am not sponsored by MAC, but I sure do like their products.

For eyes, I used MAC painterly as a base all over the lid.  Next, I used The Naked Basics palette for most of my eye look.  I used Venus (UD Naked Basic Palette) all over the lid and then under my brow bone to highlight. Then I used Naked 2 also from the NB palette in the center of the eye.  Lastly, I used Havana from the Anastasia contouring kit on the outer V and the crease,  Then I used a MAC fluffy brush to blend all the colors together.  For Mascara, I used Maybelline’s Falsies Mascara.  It is my all time favorite.  I have tried a lot of them and this is the one I always go back to.  High end, drug store, you name it, but Falsies does what it says and the price is right.  I used a black eyeliner from Clinique. My eyebrows are pretty non-existent.  They are thin and very light,  I can’t go out of the house without doing them.  I used Faint from the NB palette to fill in my brows. It is the best color for me.  Last but not least, I used MAC’s Verve lipstick.  I am not much of a lipstick wearer, but this is definitely my go to color when I do.

Next, I got into my gown, shoes, and jewelry.  My gown was a black halter full length dress with a slit up the right thigh. I purchased the dress from a speciality store called All the rage. It had a little bit of ruching in the center of the dress.  Honestly, it was very plain, but elegant.  That’s where the earrings played a huge part. Due to the halter, I didn’t need a necklace so I went a little bolder on the earrings.  They were rhinestone, dangly earrings.  The shoes were the showstopper.  I got them from Nordstrom.  They were silver, had a crisscross strap on top of the foot, as well as a horizontal strap at the toe with gems going across them.  However, the piece de resistance  – The 3″ silver heels with the zipper going down the back.  Now that is a sexy shoe.  I went more for beauty rather than comfort this time.  I had a great evening, but boy was I glad to get in the car and take those beautiful shoes off and get into some sweat pants.

I hope you enjoyed this kind of post.  I want you to get to know me better and on a more personal level and these kinds of posts help you learn more about me.  I would love to get to know you better.  Comment below and we can get a great conversation going. What is your go to make up look?  Any fancy evenings in your near future?

Where are You Shopping These Days?

EVERYTHING is so darn expensive these days. When you buy something you want to make sure it is going to stand the test of time. With clothes, I tend to make sure I’m able to wear them in more ways than one so I can make several different outfits. A lot of time you will see fashion trends carry over into home interiors and design.  Whatever is hot in fashion is probably going to look lovely in your home as well. In my home, I love to mix and match pieces that are from a store such as Target with say something I purchased from One Kings Lane.  Not only is it less expensive, but it gives your home an unique look that nobody else has.  You can definitely have the house you are looking to create and the fashion sense you’re going for without spending a fortune.

Where are you shopping for clothes and items for your home?  I would love to check out new stores.  My shopping habits are sporadic.  I usually go when I have a special event or when I know that I need something specific.  I tend to go in cycles where I will focus on my wardrobe for a while or the house.  Right now I’m focusing on some home projects. I do like to casually walk around the mall and window shop. A girl can dream can’t she? For the latest in my style and home updates, follow me on instagram.

Valentine’s Day Family Brunch

As I’ve stated in other posts, Valentine’s Day is not my favorite holiday.  I don’t think you have to have a Valentine to celebrate this day.  You can think of it as spending extra time with your loved ones or doing something nice for a friend. People really just want to know that you appreciate them.  I thought it would be a great idea to hold a little brunch for your girlfriends or your family to show them how much they mean to you.  It doesn’t have to be anything extravagant, but just something to show you care.  Plus, I always love a good reason to have a mimosa.

The family Valentine’s Day Brunch

Let’s start off this brunch with some wonderful beverages.  To make some fabulous mimosas use a dry champagne of your choice and juice.  You can go with the traditional OJ, but the Mixed Berry is a wonderful alternative and that is the one I chose to make.  You use half part champagne and half part juice.  I chose to use cute glasses I got from Target and some decorative straws to add to the festivities.

brunch

Mixed Berries and Doughnuts make great brunch choices.

Mixed fruit made for a great addition to the breakfast for something healthy to eat.  you could also have muffins and bagels with cream cheese if you so choose.  Doughnuts on a gorgeous cake plate from CWonder was the main attraction, but don’t forget the cupcakes on the heart appetizer plates also from CWonder.  These plates were embellished with gold and black polka dots.  I just love them. As soon as I saw them I just had to have them.

Appetizer plates

I love these adorable heart appetizer plates.

The ribbon garland was one I made for my daughter’s 13th birthday and it just so happens the colors worked perfectly with this theme. I also had the red pom poms and thought they added to the decor.  I chose to use my mirrored gold chest for my display instead of my kitchen island because I thought it was a little more festive for this occasion.

My Valentine’s Day brunch is actually a new tradition I’ve started for my family.  We have always had a special breakfast, but I’ve never included my parents. This year I want to include them as well.

Bold Color Risks

Working That Pop of Color

Adding a pop of unexpected color to a room will give you an inexpensive design choice without sacrificing your style options. I wanted to keep the walls a neutral color, but I also wanted to do something bold with a few furniture pieces and some accent decorations. I knew the solid blue rug and the glam white sofas were the bulk pieces in the room that really held the room together. However, I really wanted to take a risk with the chairs and the coffee table and those pieces are what I fell in love with in this room.

A view of my entire Living room.

Those furniture pieces are what make this room stand out amongst other rooms with similar color palettes. Because I had neutral colors as anchoring pieces, I was able to take the chairs and push the envelope a little with the texture on the outer section.

chairs

I also chose to go with the bright orange accent color.  I love how it gives the room the right amount of flair that I needed to brighten the room and bump up my style factor.  Using pillows as accents are an easy way to change out color seasonally, or when you want to do a little inexpensive touch up in a room.  I love the way the tray on the coffee table is the perfect shade of orange to match the pillow.

For the gallery wall in the living room, I chose to have our various family portraits along the wall in different groupings.  I planned our clothing around what room I was going to display the portraits.  I knew I wanted to have neutral colors with pops of orange in the picture. I wanted my husband to be the bold color and for the rest of the family to anchor around him.  With us wearing white with pops of color in our scarves, I thought the grouping would work well in the living room.  The orange in my outdoor furniture also matched the orange in his shirt and really pulled the look together.  I think the gallery wall gives the room the personal touch it was lacking. Next time you take family photos, first, envision where they will go and then pick out your clothing so that it matches some coloring for that room.

Does the room your working on need a bold pop of color?  If so, make that your goal for the upcoming season or next holiday.  I would love to see the projects you are working on. For other decorating ideas, follow me on pinterest to see more beautiful decor ideas (see icon in right hand corner).

An Inviting Entryway

Stylish First Impression

When someone steps into your home, you want them to feel welcome as soon as they walk through the door. Your entryway can make a great first impression and set the tone for the rest of the house. This room needs to be functional to store outerwear and shoes, (especially if you don’t have a mudroom) It also gives your guests a sneak peek as to what they will see inside the rest of your home. As a design rule of thumb, you want to pay close attention to the size of your entryway and be realistic of what you can really do in this space. You want the entryway to be practical for storage so things are not cluttered and look nice for guests’ arrival. Mine is two story, but where I put my console table is not. Just remember to keep things to scale and you can’t go wrong. Your decorating options are endless.

entry way

You want your entryway to be welcoming to your guests

Your entryway becomes a real focal point as soon as you enter the home.  Some people don’t have a mantel and this vignette becomes their main decorating space for special decor and holiday favorites. You want to create a space that is functional for you. The last thing you want to do is to replicate a cookie cutter model of a blogger’s mantel or a magazine picture that doesn’t reflect your style or your needs. All floor plans are different and require personal touches depending on how you will be using your foyer.

Now, let’s jump into the fun part. My glass vases are from pier one and luckily I bought them on sale. The wooden carving wall art and wooden decorative vase are from Target.  I love finding beautiful items that look expensive, but are so reasonably priced.  You don’t have to use all high priced items when decorating.  You can mix and match and your vignettes will turn out lovely.  The key is to shop often and to watch your sales papers.  Have a plan, know what your looking for, and get ideas from decorating magazines, pinterest, and your instagram friends.  These are all very visual and should give you tons of ideas.

This cashmere throw is from Frontgate.

You can also change out your entryway for the holidays and add in seasonal decor.  That is an easy and quick way to decorate your house without going into too much detail, but putting forth a big effort.  For other great posts on entryways check out Kathy, from The daily Nest.  She has an amazing blog and her entryway article is one you don’t want to miss.  For pictures click (here). Lastly, one of my favorite bloggers, Liz, from Lizmarieblog, does a lot of DIY projects.  Her Valentine vignette was done using wood that she glued together and finished off with other decorations. I just love it and all the other projects in her home.  Go check her out (here.)
